How to Improve Your CV (Curriculum Vitae)

Your CV may not guarantee you a job, but it is the first point of contact with a potential hiring manager. It is the very first opportunity given to you to prove yourself to the employer. Making a good first impression is key to landing the job you want.

Here are some tips on how you could improve your CV to catch the eye as you compete with hundreds if not thousands of other applicants.

  • Make sure your tagline or objective is tailored to the specific job. Your personality and expertise should shine through. It should be hard-hitting and make an impact. This is where you sell yourself.

  • You need to make sure your CV is well-thought out and prepared in advance. Rushing into it without proper vetting will not serve you well. You could have the basics down, so there is enough time for you to tailor you CV according to the employment opportunity.

  • Make sure that there are no spelling or grammatical errors in your CV. There is nothing more off-putting for an employer than carelessness, which says a lot about you. Read through your CV more than once. Double check for any mistakes. Or better yet, if you feel your attention to detail is weak, have the CV checked by a professional.

  • Make sure your CV is easy to read. Do not use long sentences or unnecessary complicated verbiage in an effort to impress the hiring manager. Your main focus should be on the clarity of your CV and it should be precise in order to retain the interest of the potential employer.
